The Al Fracassa Legacy Foundation Launches to Preserve a Life of Faith, Character & Community Leadership

The newly established Al Fracassa Legacy Foundation announces its official launch, dedicated to honoring the life and values of Coach Al Fracassa—a man whose commitment to faith, family, athletics and mentorship shaped generations of students, athletes and community members.

Coach Fracassa’s more than 50-year career exemplified excellence, humility and service. He didn’t just build successful teams; he built honorable men. He believed deeply in the notion that what happens on the field and in the classroom has implications far beyond the final score: these are the moments when character is formed. The Foundation will carry forward that mission.

“Our purpose is simple,” said the Foundation’s Board Chair. “We exist to support high-school student-athletes and the coaches who guide them, recognizing that both play a critical role in building strong communities.” Through scholarships, mentorship opportunities, archival efforts and other resources, the Foundation will preserve Coach Fracassa’s legacy—and inspire future generations to live by the values he embodied.

Key areas of focus for the Foundation include:

  • Scholarships for high-school athletes who reflect Coach Fracassa’s commitment to integrity, service and leadership.
  • Coach support and mentorship programs that help emerging coaches model the same kind of character-based leadership Coach Fracassa practiced.
  • Archival and digital preservation of Coach Fracassa’s more than half-century of coaching memorabilia and photographs, ensuring that his story remains accessible and inspirational.
  • Annual Legacy Dinner, beginning in December 2026, where the Foundation will honor one of Coach Fracassa’s celebrated teams, present the prestigious Scout Team Award, and recognize the “Coach of the Year” who exemplifies his values.

“Every young man under his watch—from the star quarterback to the practice-squad player, from the band member to the struggling student seeking direction—knew that Coach cared,” his former players say. He had a gift for seeing people, for recognizing potential, and for guiding not simply athletes, but young men.
As one alumni put it: “He led with integrity, humor, and quiet strength—and deeply understood that success is rooted in love and humility.”

The Foundation operates independently of Shrine and Brother Rice high schools, though it remains deeply connected to the community and traditions Coach Fracassa established. It invites community leaders, alumni, parents, coaches and friends to join in supporting its mission to honor a man whose faith, family and leadership shaped not just games, but lives.

Coach’s Enduring Legacy

Some say Coach Fracassa belonged to Brother Rice. But perhaps the truth is this: Brother Rice belonged to him. Every player who raised a helmet in his locker room, every student who sought his compassion, every colleague who walked the halls beside him, every alumnus who still lives by his mottos decades later — every life he touched is part of the story of Al Fracassa.

We mourn his passing, but more than that, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, humility, and heart. He asked his players to “Do it better than it’s ever been done before.” And he did. In every season of his remarkable life – he truly did.
